I once heard someone say that siblings live outside the touch of time. That brothers and sisters know one another as they always were – their hearts, family jokes, the same family fights, deep secrets, shared griefs, and unforgettable joys.
I still can see my baby sister Emily with curly, untamed hair riding on the shoulders of my father managing a piece of gum too big for her mouth. I still remember her sleeping in too late, talking to her dolls, and yelling at my brother, “DUCAS!” trying to pronounce the letter L.
As time has passed inescapably, the bond and shared experiences between my sister and I have formed into a true friendship and I’ve been incredibly lucky to have watched this relationship with her soon-to-be husband grow from it’s infancy to a love unwavering and definite.
And though I thought I knew for certain, I didn’t….until this day…. when Blair and Emily so willingly opened their hearts, shared stories, and let us onto their sacred ground.
On this day I not only saw my baby sister, but the woman she is becoming. The way she’ll soon stand beside Blair not just as his best friend, but as his wife. The way she’ll love him fiercely and cling tightly to his hand whether times are good or bad. Glimmers of the kind of mother she’ll be to their future children—loving, intentional, and courageous. And Blair, the man I’m so happy to be welcoming as my new brother. His gentle, adventurous, and steady nature. The way he cares deeply for those around him, seeks to live life to its fullest, and most importantly, loves my baby sister so well.
So excited for the journey these two are on. Here are images from a rainy day on the dunes. May they always remember exactly how they felt on this day for generations to come.
