Modern Nashville Wedding

You know that scene in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty where Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) sees the snow leopard and doesn’t take the picture?

Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) asks, “When are you going to take it [the picture]?”

Sean O’Connell responds, “Sometimes I don’t. When I like a moment, I mean me personally, I don’t like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it.”

I love that scene and think of it often. Especially on days like this.

Jared & Shelby had just become husband and wife and as Josh & Sarah (their officiants) began the final prayer, Shelby closed her eyes to join them while Jared chose to keep his eyes open. His teary eyes wandered across her face as if he were observing every inch of his new bride. How she looked, how she breathed, the way her eyes rested when they were closed…

While everyone else’s eyes were shut Jared took his moment. I’ll never forget the look on his face.

I didn’t take the picture. It was too sacred. The beauty of that moment will forever rest embedded and woven in the heart of Jared’s memory.

That’s the thing.

These images are treasures only because of the moments in them.

Our hope, over everything, is that Jared and Shelby don’t remember photographs but they remember moments and how they felt when no one else was watching.
