Ethan + Ann-Holland, Married

We were blindsided by Ethan and Ann-Holland. Straight up. The love, the maturity, and the wisdom that pours out of these two was not only an inspiration to us but a tangible spirit that completely shaped our pursuit as photographers.

That sounds far-fetched…but bare with us.

Over the last few years we’ve continued to refine our voices as artist by honing in on the things that invigorate us, the people who inspire us, and the life that we want to lead.  And during that process these three words (which you’ve heard before) surfaced over and over and over again…

Raw, Honest, Unfussy

Three words that defined our approach as photographers, and defined the people we wanted to photograph.

And so back in March, Ann-Holland and Ethan came along and unknowingly defined those three words in their relationship, their past, and the celebration of their wedding day.

When we asked Ann-Holland what it was about Ethan that she couldn’t live without, she replied, “I could live without Ethan but I wouldn’t want to. I think that’s part of what makes us have a healthy relationship. I have friends and interests and a meaning in life that is greater than just being in a relationship but at the end of the day he is the one I want to be there for me and to be there for. I know that I can be a complete goofball or come out with dirty hair and no makeup and I don’t have to think twice about his love for me. We have fun and adventures together and sometimes we just sit on the couch and fall asleep together. We don’t have to impress each other or change each other.  We just belong.  And that I couldn’t live without.”

A marriage that functions not as two needy people unsure of their value and purpose…but two complete and significant souls….living life together.

“Of course I want our wedding day to go smoothly but I want there to just be a joy that overcomes any obstacle. If it rains then it rains. If the electricity goes out then we’ll build a fire and light some candles.”

Ann-Holland so effortlessly shared the best summation of “raw, honest, unfussy” we’ve ever heard. A wedding not void of personal details but not contingent on them either.

This spirit was woven throughout this day.  When it rained it only rained enough to remind every guest how lucky they were to not be drenched, when Ethan read his vows he didn’t fight his tears…he let them fall, and when the band began to play music joy turned guests into friends and friends into family.

These are the kind of stories that invigorate us.  Raw, honest, unfussy stories of love and the mark it makes on others.
